Sustaining ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global seafood supply chains
Message from the CEO Tobias

Greetings ,

Spring signifies hope and new beginnings, which are especially needed after the year we have all experienced. As a return to some pre-COVID normalcy may be in sight, we have hope that we can be with our family, friends, and colleagues in the sustainable seafood world someday soon. In the spirit of spring renewal, our team at FishWise is happy to share some good news. We are excited to roll out many new projects that further our updated mission to sustain the oceans and those who depend upon them by transforming global seafood supply chains.

In February, the Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) team launched its six Comprehensive Traceability Principles to offer guidance to governments in establishing electronic traceability programs. Accompanying this work, the "Pathway to the Principles" also provides tools for navigating the design and maintenance of electronic traceability programs.

Early next month, our team will be releasing an enhanced version of the Roadmap for Improving Seafood Ethics (RISE) to provide the seafood industry with clear and practical steps to improve labor practices in supply chains. With online lessons and educational materials, new tools for addressing human rights risks within supply chains, and eight actionable steps to guide companies at any stage, we hope this work will help the seafood community make real progress on social responsibility.

As 2021 continues to race along, I am reminded that the real strength of our community is the tremendous collection of individuals doing good work every day. I hope that soon we will all be able to reconnect in person and find new ways to achieve more significant impact - together.

With optimism,
Tobias Aguirre

PATHWAYS TO TRACEABILITY
Fishing Boat
The Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) released six Comprehensive Traceability Principles designed to help users get the most out of their seafood traceability programs by supporting ecological, social responsibility, and economic goals. The Principles were developed in collaboration with over 35 experts worldwide, demonstrating what is possible when we work together to make seafood traceable.
FISHING FOR GENDER EQUALITY
Women in seafood
On March 8, we joined forces with three incredible women to write an International Women's Day blog. It was an honor to work with Julie Kuchepatov, founder of Seafood and Gender Equality; Sarah Harper, post-doctoral from the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries; and Rosanna Conteras, Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative Chair - to call for a more inclusive world in seafood. Addressing gender equality is an integral part of tackling some of our most significant environmental, social, and economic problems. We believe this work deserves all of our attention - 365 days a year.

USING SEAFOOD DATA TO DETECT HUMAN RIGHTS RISKS

On April 20, join SALT for a conversation with Judy Gearhart and Rainer Braun about the key considerations when aiming to monitor human rights in seafood supply chains.

Several key data elements (KDEs) are collected within seafood supply chains. Much of this data is applied for ecological and economic objectives. But some of this data, when combined with additional information and shared with labor rights specialists, can be used to document worker welfare and may help identify investigation. Please register in advance for this meeting.

SAFEWAY UPLIFTS FISHING COMMUNITY WITH COVID VACCINES

This month, Safeway launched a vaccination program for the Dutch Harbor community Bering Sea fishing fleet. Fishers have been impacted tremendously by the ongoing pandemic, and receiving scheduled vaccinations is challenging when at sea. Our team was thrilled to hear about this uplifting news from our partners at Safeway.

What is your most-loved seafood to cook with and why? I get most excited about spot prawn season. Although it only lasts four to six weeks, spot prawns are a true west coast delicacy, and there is nothing like a seafood boil with friends (and a little butter) on the beach to make this a perfect dish.

What is your favorite way to play in the ocean? Exploring tide pools with my twin babes makes for the perfect way to spend any day.
