Sustaining ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global seafood supply chains
Message from the CEO Tobias
Greetings Guest,

With the new year, we have already welcomed a new President, new opportunities, and fresh hope for the year ahead. Last week, President Biden announced his ambitious response to the climate crisis, including an order that commits to conserving at least 30 percent of our oceans and land by 2030. Mr. Biden's thoughtful yet bold response included a whole-of-government approach involving leaders from 21 agencies and departments. This holistic perspective of our greatest challenges is integral to our work ahead in tackling both environmental and social issues.

I am also filled with optimism and excitement to introduce Nathan Floyd as FishWise's Chief Operating Officer. Nathan brings with him a history of sparking innovation, fostering a growth mindset, and building consensus among competing interests in government, business, legal, and nonprofit spaces around the globe. Our team is thrilled to be working with Nathan and we look forward to discovering the pathways that will open for our work under his leadership.

In this newsletter, we share news of our team already making a splash in 2021 with projects built around our new strategic direction, upcoming guiding principles for implementing comprehensive traceability from SALT later this month, a partner spotlight on Hy-Vee's latest achievement, and much more. The FishWise team is motivated to "give it 100 percent" as we continue to work towards the ambitious, yet necessary environmental and social sustainability goals required to achieve our mission. We look forward to elevating our work and to the new possibilities we will realize together.

With (renewed) hope,

THE TRUTH ABOUT ELECTRONIC TRACEABILITY

Working with our retail partners over the years has taught us a thing or two about implementing electronic traceability. For an inside look at adopting traceability, check out a recent blog, "The Truth About Electronic Traceability: Lessons Learned from Working with the Seafood Industry," by Lindsay Jennings, traceability project director.
UPCOMING SEAFOOD TRACEABILITY PRINCIPLES

Keep an eye out for the upcoming release later this month of a comprehensive set of electronic traceability principles for seafood! The Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) collaboratively developed these principles with 30 members from around the world to offer guidelines for governments implementing or improving electronic traceability programs to address economic, ecological, and social goals. Accompanying the principles is a "Pathway to the Principles," which offers clear guidance and resources when designing or carrying out an electronic traceability program. These resources will be available online and we are happy to connect interested parties with our SALT team or you may email SALT@FishWise.org for more information.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Please join us in offering appreciation and recognition to our business partner, Hy-Vee, for completing their seafood due diligence plan two years ahead of schedule! This achievement involved specific steps to increase transparency and reduce the risks of sourcing illegal seafood in Hy-Vee's seafood supply chains. Our team looks forward to helping to set extensive new goals that reflect Hy-Vee's ongoing commitment to the Responsible Choice Seafood Program.

What is your most-loved seafood to cook with and why?
Seasonally in Florida we have stone crab from October - May. It's sustainable, local, and perfect straight out of the shell. A bit of warmed butter doesn't hurt, either.

What is your favorite way to play in the ocean?
I love paddleboarding around our local canals and through some of our nature preserves, between narrow mangrove tunnels, and scouting local wildlife.

FishWise is relaunching RISE
FishWise is relaunching RISE, the Roadmap for Improving Seafood Ethics, this spring and we're looking for additions to the "resources" section of the new site! If your organization has a social responsibility resource, tool, or case study that should be shared, please send it to RISE@FishWise.org by February 26.

We're also building out our RISE network (formerly the 'Referral Hub') to better connect companies with organizations working on social responsibility in seafood.
