Greetings Guest!

As we enter the holiday season, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to everyone who has supported FishWise in another year that was rich with learnings, collaborations, and significant progress across multiple fronts. We are grateful to be part of an incredible community of industry, businesses, NGOs, and philanthropists. Thank you for being part of our journey and I look forward to our continued impact in the new year ahead.

Small-Scale Traceability Efforts in Peru

FishWise's Traceability Division was on the road this month to learn about traceability and electronic monitoring efforts taking place in small-scale mahi mahi fishing villages in Northern Peru. Following the site visit, the team traveled south for the inaugural Seafood Lima Expo to collect feedback on the Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP) from Peruvian exporters, and to present on traceability and government reporting efforts taking place in the U.S. It was a busy week of learning, sharing, and of course, eating fresh ceviche! The whole experience wouldn't have been possible without our NGO colleagues, Future of Fish and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, helping to coordinate and facilitate a successful trip. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the fishing communities for spending time with us, and sharing insights about their livelihood. Keep an eye out for a more in-depth debrief from this trip - coming soon.

Notes from the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit

Ashley Greenley attended the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit and presented on a panel entitled, “Traceability and Regulation: Eliminating Illegal Seafood Products from the Market.” She also represented the Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) and their newly launched website as a tool for connecting global traceability efforts. Read more.

Fishing for Technology Solutions in South Africa

SALT Project Director, Traci Linder visited South Africa for the recent Information and Communication Technology Solutions for Fisheries (ICT4Fisheries) Conference. Traci joined key stakeholders in engaging in honest conversations about the use of technology to benefit small-scale fisheries. Stay tuned for more information from this fantastic event!

Applying Social Responsibility Learnings to RISE

The Social Responsibility Division has been everywhere from San Francisco for the Responsible Business Alliance and Social Capital Markets conferences, to Spain for the IMO conference on Fishing Vessel Safety, and Bangkok for the Issara Institutes Global Forum. We're grateful for these opportunities to share FishWise’s work and eager to apply the learnings to our partner programs and via our recently launched RISE platform.

Using Data to Source Tuna Responsibly

Our Data Division has developed an online vendor survey with powerful behind-the-scenes data analytics to help create more transparency across seafood supply chains. In the past year, we expanded our data collection to include information about at-sea transshipment. Learn more about how this is especially important for tracing species like tuna with our latest blog
